I was a total nerd in grade school. 🙊
All I wanted was a Gold star ⭐️ in Miss Shireen's 2nd-grade math class. I just wanted her to recognize that I knew my multiplication tables.
The workplace isn't any different. Our employees are looking for the corporate version of a gold star (AKA: positive feedback)
Sadly, most managers leave good money on the table when they don't share positive feedback: Here's a sobering statistic:
How can you get good at giving positive feedback?
Here's a powerful framework I call S.T.A.R ⭐️. This framework will help you give rich, contextual feedback at work (and home)
S → SPECIFIC: Share a specific example of positive behavior.
T → THANK them: Show them gratitude. Be expressive.
A → AUTHENTIC: Make your feedback genuine + heartfelt.
R → REAL-TIME: Don't wait too long. The sooner you share, the better.
Here are two examples:
"Jack, I loved the slides today. I also noticed great engagement from the team. Thank you.
"Mary, Good call with the customer yesterday. I really appreciate how you've been partnering with Andy on this key deliverable. The customer seems to appreciate it as well. Excellent work. Thank you"
When it comes to giving positive feedback, there's only one rule to follow: If you see something good, say something good.
Keep leading.
